Dear Parents and Families,

It has been another amazing fortnight at Goollelal Primary. Last week Geoff Rintoul took four of our students to participate in the North Metropolitan Robotics Challenge at Westminster Primary School. This involved competing in six challenges which tested their logic, coding skills and teamwork. You can imagine the excitement and pride we felt when our team took out first prize! I would like to congratulate Tobias, Katie, Emily and Zak, not only for their amazing robotic skills, but for their outstanding behaviour and sportsmanship.

We also had a wonderful turn out for our Pre-primary Father’s Day activity on Wednesday last week. It was great to see all our Pre-primaries building money boxes, kicking the footy and enjoying the company of their Dad’s, Grandad’s and other family members.

Our Year 5’s in TA13 visited 89.7FM on Wednesday. Once again our Year 5 students have worked hard to represent Goollelal Primary with pride. Well done to Bev Woodworth and the students of TA13 for presenting such an entertaining show.

This week we have been celebrating Book Week. It has been a terrific week with many special events to help our students and staff celebrate their love of reading and promoting books in our community. Events kicked off last week with a visit from author/illustrator Kelly Canby, organised by Jane Leeson.

Book Week also included Open night on Wednesday and finished with our Book Week assembly this morning which was written and choreographed by the talented Kerry Hartmann and Maryanne Twomey.

We also enjoyed the Book Fair which was coordinated by Emma Hinchcliffe with the help of a number of parent and staff volunteers.

Thank you to all the Goollelal staff and parents for making this week so enjoyable for our students. It is always one of my favourite weeks of the year. I love to read professionally and for leisure. This is a passion I developed as a child. I remember reading books including ‘The Secret Seven’, ‘Anne of Green Gables’  and ‘Charlotte’s Web’ before graduating to ‘Freaky Friday’ and ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole’ as a teenager.

Reading is a wonderful leisure activity and is an integral part of success at school and beyond. I encourage you to make time to read with your child at home, not only for homework, but just to spend time sharing the love of a good book. The following article highlights ten good reasons for reading to your child, especially in the early years.

Girls in Football

Last weekend Tabitha, Ada, Kelsie and Matilda were lucky enough to take part in the WA Women’s Football league Premiership medal presentation. Our girls in the Kingsley 4-6 year team also played at half time.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN 2017 results have just been delivered to the school and our staff have been having a close look at both individual and whole school data. This data is used at a classroom level, to cater for individual and group needs and, at a whole school level to set targets and aims for future directions. Individual student reports will be sent home at the end of next week.

Kindergarten Enrolments

We still have spaces available for Kindy 2018. If you have a child who was born between the 1st of July 2013 and the 30th of June 2014 please come to the office to complete an enrolment form.

Playgroup

Our Playgroup is now up and running! Thank you to Laura O’Donovan for taking on the role of President and to Deanne Gray and Karen Haseldine for volunteering as committee members. The Playgroup takes place every Thursday morning from 9-11 am in our Kindy room.

Have a lovely weekend. Hopefully, we will start seeing some warmer weather soon, in time for our Faction Carnival next Friday. I hope to see many of you there!
